Cold pizza for breaky this morning! Nothing quite like half a Hawaiian at 7:30am. Breakfast is proving tricky to come by so I’m exploring alternative options. I’ll probably just buy some porridge oats going forward.
Other than that today was a fairly uneventful day, which was lovely. The bike is holding up well with one spoke missing and is actually relatively comfortable.
I started off at the beach in the morning meaning there was only one thing to expect and that was a climb and that proved to be very true. The first 20km felt harder than I was expecting but I think, just like in running, I’m just a sluggish starter.

After a quick coffee break in Broadwood where the coffee lady, who was originally from West Ken, told me about the local drug lord and how he looked after her, everything felt much better. It seemed a bit weird that she’d mention the local drug dealer within a couple of minutes of meeting me, but it’s obviously a bit of a problem in these parts as I’ve seen a fair few signs in towns celebrating that the town was “meth free” and even some signs saying certain areas in town are alcohol free. I’ll try to get a pic tomorrow of this.
Anyway I found out about how hard I can push on the flat today cause I had to gas it to make the Hokianga ferry crossing and I’m proud to say that I can actually do between 25 and 28km/h, which doesn’t seem too shabby given my bike and my pannier.

After the ferry crossing I sat down and ate the remainder of my pizza and fruit before quickly wrapping up a fairly hilly final 17km and settling in to a lovely lodge at the end of a steep gravel road.

I’m feeling surprisingly fresh, which is a good thing cause tomorrow is a wee bit punchy at 135km and 1300m of elevation. Why I booked that place I have no idea, but who doesn’t like a challenge?
